The Britannia Pub from Scovell Road 1940
The Britannia Pub, 144 Southwark Bridge Road (behind the lamp post) pictured from Scovell Road showing damage caused by a German parachute mine dropped during the blitz the 16th October 1940. The decorative gable which displayed the date of construction and most of the roof seems to have been knocked down. The most serious damage however was to the tenements, Queen's Building's, on both sides of Scovell Road, some blocks of which were largely destroyed. Many of the tenants were sheltering in the basement when the bomb struck – 42 lost their lives and many more were injured. Of the buildings in this photo only number 146 to the left of the Britannia is still standing today
